Do you like the look of edge to edge quilting but don’t like following a line?  Let Kim show you how to freehand quilt fast, fun & fabulous designs all starting with a swirl. Starting with how to piece a stripy quilt on the longarm, we will Start with several different Swirls and add few simple shapes for fast freehand quilting, then add a few more fun elements to create fabulous designs to cover your quilt tops.  We will also explore how to use these shapes to create complimentary borders and sashings. 


That Loopy Thang: Quick custom designs for samplers and other quilts that stump your imagination.

Bring your sketch books and follow along as Kim uses loops, swirls and continuous curves to design custom treatments for sampler blocks. You may boost your profit margin with this technique to quickly get those samplers done. Students are encouraged to bring unquilted tops for group discussion on design possibilities. This class if for all skill levels, but geared for beginners to intermediate.
Supply List: Pen for drawing and notes.  Optional: 4 to 5 different colored pens or pencils.

Going in Circles – Designing a Modern Wholecloth Quilt 
Monday, May 13th

1pm to 5pm
In this hands on class Kim will teach you her approach to designing a modern wholecloth quilt using over lapping circles and a variety of freehand designs.  We will discuss the best way to make your wholecloth design stand out with background quilting.  Once you’ have mapped out your wholecloth you will mark your quilt top and start stitching.
Supply List: Pen and paper for notes, thread snips, Circle rulers in a variety of sizes (example: 8”, 7”, 6”, 5”, 4” & 3”) for marking and stitching around, Staedtler® Mars® Combo Circle Template (available at office supply stores),
straight edge ruler for marking quilt top.

Heavy Metal Quilting
Wednesday, May 15th

12:30pm to 2:30pm
With the look and feel of rod iron fencing Heavy Metal gets its name.  Don’t be fooled by the name, these designs are made using soft curves and spirals.  You will learn how to quilt the border treatment that started it all with a little bit of marking to divide up the space and turn the corners with ease.  Kim will explain the process of creating unique custom designs for many traditional and modern quilts.

Starting with a Swirl 2- Borders & Sashings

Thursday, May 16th

4pm to 6pm 
You’ve learned and mastered edge to edge quilting and now want to take your quilting to the next level by adding freehand borders and sashing…  Kim will show you how to create borders and sashing to compliment the designs learned in Starting with a Swirl- Freehand Edge to Edge Quilting.  Didn’t take that class… no problem, you can still join the fun.  We will start with a simple swirl design and add leaves, feathers and more. Learn the easy way to evenly space your design from one edge to the other and around the corners.

  1. I'm signed up for your Thursday class at MQS, Starting with a Swirl 2 - Borders & Sashings. I was determined to sign up for one of your classes (any of them) this year since I didn't get to take one from you last year. Yee haw! :)
